Mormon Tabernacle Choir – Hallelujah Chorus

Say what you will about the wacky beliefs of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, those Mormons know how to put together a choir and crank out a Hallelujah Chorus.

Many people don’t know this, but this song is based on a passage of scripture from the book of Revelation, specifically Revelation 11:15, although the word Hallelujah doesn’t actually appear in that verse. Many also don’t know that “Hallelujah” literally means “Praise God”, with the “jah” part being the first part of “Yahweh” (the “j” and “y” are the same letter in Hebrew).

I had the opportunity to sing the Hallelujah chorus in a large choir at the church I grew up at for their 100th Anniversary celebration service. It is not an easy song to sing (at least, not for the tenor section, which I was a part of), but it is beautiful to be surrounded by this this music as you participate in it. It’s an entirely different feeling to be singing this song than it is to be listening to others sing it.

But if you’re going to listen to others sing it, it might as well be the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
